i think the sparring was right up Khans street - headguards etc, then his chin wont be tested and he looks great, take the head guard off and he’d be on the canvas after 1 combo!!!

    Speed Kills

    by Paul (Posted Sat, 29 Nov 2008 17:46:53 +0000)
    Speed Kills

One of boxing’s richest ever fights takes place this weekend at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas as ‘The Golden Boy’ Oscar De La Hoya takes on Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao. Billed as ‘The Dream Match’ this has all the hallmarks of a classic as Pacquiao looks to continue his rise up the weight divisions to 147lbs to fight face his toughest test to date.

Pacquiao is currently the WBC Lightweight Champion. He was also the former WBC Super Featherweight Champion, Ring Magazine’s super featherweight and featherweight champion, world champion at IBF Super Bantamweight, and WBC Flyweight divisions. This will be by far the heaviest division Pacquiao has ever fought in and many fans feel that De La Hoya’s natural size and strength advantage will be too much for Pacquiao to overcome. Pacquiao’s last fight was against David Diaz at the Lightweight limit of 135lbs. Pacquiao used his superior speed and footwork to break his opponent down and eventually knock him out in the ninth round with a beautifully delivered left hook.

Oscar De La Hoya has been the poster boy for the lighter weights during the last two decades but has become somewhat of a businessman in recent years. The founder of the aptly named Golden Boy Promotions has a shrewd business brain but is no slouch inside the ring either. With a career spanning some 16 years, De La Hoya is the only man in the history to win major titles in six different weight divisions. No one can deny De La Hoya’s boxing credentials but in his last six fights he has won three and lost three. If one looks at his loss to Floyd Mayweather, it is obvious that De La Hoya had the better of the first six rounds, using his jab to good effect. However, the last half of the fight saw De La Hoya noticeably slow and abandon his jab, on his way to losing a close split decision.

This fight will be a battle between the speed of Manny Pacquiao and the strength and size of Oscar De La Hoya. Fighting out of a southpaw stance, Pacquiao likes to mix it up and throw his fast right jab and powerful backhand and catch his opponents backing off in a straight line. Oscar stalks his opponents and fights out of an orthodox stance. He throws quality punches rather than quantity and is a sharp counter puncher. De La Hoya will enjoy a substantial height, reach and natural weight advantage over Pacquiao on the night of the fight.

Oscar De La Hoya is the heavy betting favourite but Manny Pacquiao should not be underestimated. We have seen in the past how speed can completely negate a heavier and more powerful fighters’ style. Manny Pacquiao demonstrated this to good effect as he effortlessly outboxed and stopped David Diaz in brutal fashion. Oscar De La Hoya, at 35 years of age is in the twilight of his career, he simply will not be able to deal with the speed and work rate of Pacquiao. He may have some success over the first 4 to 6 rounds but as the fight progresses De La Hoya will be catching more of the Pacman’s punches. Pacquiao will simply move in and out of range and throw too many shots for Oscar to absorb or counter.

De La Hoya will have a punchers chance as he has an impressive record of 30 knockouts from 39 wins, but this is the only saving grace for the ageing Mexican fighter. On the other hand, Pacquiao himself has 35 knockouts from 47 fights but these have come at lighter weights. Pacquiao should be a hurtful puncher at 147lbs but if he is to win by knockout it will be in the later rounds.

Pacquiao will not simply stand in front of Oscar and allow him to use his size and strength. He will set a high tempo, be constantly moving in and out of range, and hit Oscar with bundles of fast accurate punches which over the course of the fight, will wear Oscar down and eventually stop him.

Prediction: Manny Pacquiao wins by 11th round TKO.

    What is BMR?

good summary of BMR ) look at AMR (active metabolic rate) when calorie counting to lose weight as this takes into account exercise, as BMR is applicable if you were lying down all day

AMR calculation is hard because you have to guess calories burned for a workout - i know theres a few places on line which will give you calories for running etc but it doesnt give me alot of confidence as ‘running’ can take different forms like interval, easy etc
